Pregnancy loss - better support

Women who lose a baby receive no free counselling, we need a funded system of at least 6-10 counselling sessions for women who have experienced a pregancy loss

Why the contribution is important

Grieff and loss experiences especially related to pregnancy loss are often not talked about and can lead to long term depressive illness

The entire pathway for pregnancy loss needs to be looked at. The system is very insensitive to women's preferences for care and their emotional needs during the process and after. There is no interest in finding answers for whānau which prolongs the grief and trauma.

Counselling should include couples counselling and counselling for the partner. Both are involved in making a baby and are grieving the loss.

The language used needs to change to acknowledge that for many it is the loss of an already much loved baby. "Products of conception" should not be a term used when discussing a miscarriage.

More education on infertility and miscarriage is schools and early life is required to make it more socially acceptable and people are more comfortable to talk about it so they feel less isolated when it happens.

I couldn't agree with this more. It has been seven-years since I had an emotionally and physically traumatic miscarriage. It has impacted my everyday to the point that I can't work and my relationship with my two children born since had suffered. All of the physical and mental health treatment I have sought since has come at a huge cost to me, and continues to do so. I feel COMPLETELY LET DOWN by the current health system. This is another example of how the system in inequitable towards women. The entire way the current system treats pregnancy loss needs to be redone with input from women who have lived experience. I would be happy to be contacted about this further.

Tautoko! There isn't much support out there and when there is, it costs and arm and a leg. It like no one cares.
