Patient advocates

It can be hard navigating the hospital system as an inpatient, understanding a lot of information given to you by consultants in a short space of time and needing to make urgent decisions. From my experience as an inpatient, people aren't always listened to or given time and respect to process information or given guidance to manage longer hospital stays or privacy.
There are not enough female Consultants for wahine who have been through sexual trauma. And mental health is not always considered.

Why the contribution is important

Patients aren't getting access to all the information, resources or support they need. Which can cause additional trauma and delay recovery.
I ended up with anxiety and PTSD. Probably would have been worse had it not been for the support of fellow patients who had experienced longer hospital stays. I had to manage at home alone after major surgeries as it was expected my teenagers would care for me which put a lot of pressure on my whanau and children.
