Improve accessibility

At minimum we need to implement the recommendations stated in the UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) "Concluding observations on the combined second and third periodic reports of New Zealand" (2022): https://tbinternet.ohchr.org/_layouts/15/treatybodyexternal/SessionDetails1.aspx?SessionID=2545&Lang=en

Why the contribution is important

Equitable access is crucial to health and wellbeing. For example, to information and services.

G.Ps need to actively listen or accessibility is lost. Accessing a doctor with knowledge of chronic pain is a problem.

GPs need more time with patients to listen, share ideas, and deal with complex issues like chronic pain. Eliminate the 15 min appointment by funding realistically especially for Maori , Pasifka and low socioeconomic and disabled communities .

Accessiblity is limited because it is very hard to find an opening in a medical practice as a patient and the practices are very busy and providers very tired. Primary care is underfunded and GPs nurses are getting burnt out and reducing hours of work or retiring earlier than anticipated. This reduces the workforce and makes it less appealing to young doctors.

the health system needs to be reoriented to fit the needs of populations with higher health needs e.g opening times suited for communities ie after hours, weekends, Maori, Pacific, Low socio economic communities given priority attention with regard to preventative care and support

Kaupapa Maori solutions to be given credibility in preventative care

My daughter is bed bound with severe myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and the only health care she can access is a GP visit costing $90 (with a community services card). No other health professionals will visit at home. Physically attending a health appointment will increase the severity of her symptoms and risk incurring new symptoms resulting in her loss of the minimal functional ability she has left and extreme suffering/death.

She is not alone, there are many others in NZ who have severe/very severe ME who are unable to access the health care they need. Are we still a developing nation??
