Dedicated ovarian cancer research

Dedicated research funding for ovarian cancer - to improve survival. Dedicated funding will help ensure this important area gets the research it needs to improve survival.

Why the contribution is important

Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of gynaecological cancer death in NZ and the least survivable women's cancer. Research from overseas and within New Zealand shows it is disproportionately underfunded - likely due to gender. Men with prostate cancer have more than twice the chance of living 10 years compared to women with ovarian cancer - yet in the 1970s survival between the two cancers was really similar. The greatest contributor to this increasing survival gap is the difference in research investment locally and globally.

A focus on non-invasive testing would enable Whatu Ora to implement a screening programme, which would lead to earlier diagnosis and therefore better survival rates.
