Length of time medications dispensed for

Currently when receiving some medications via prescription,  these are issued for a short period of time. When one has to be on these medications for awhile  wouldn't it make sense to dispense them for longer? 

I'm on long term medication that I get a 3 month prescription for. I receive a month's worth each time and then have to arrange a further prescription soon again. 

Given the pressure on the health system, it would make sense to dispense medications for longer.  For appropriate medications,  this could be at 6 month intervals.

Where it is safe to do so, dispensing medications for longer will reduce the need gor patients to be regularly visiting pharmacies and their GP.
